Wargames Movie Poster
AI, Hackers and Nuclear War – not something you usually associate Matthew Broderick with. In this 1983 film, we see a young computer whiz kid accidentally hacks into a top secret super-computer which has complete control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
He innocently starts the countdown to World War 3, after it challenges him to a game between America and Russia. Can he convince the computer he wanted to play a game and not the real thing?
The only winning move is not to play.
In a New York Times article in 2016, it was reported that this movie ended up having a significant effect on the president at that time, Ronald Reagan. His understanding of and policy regarding telecommunications and computer systems security is said to have directly led him to push the first federal laws intended to outlaw hacking after watching this movie.
